Pickles weren't rationed during WWII, so why-oh-why do I find myself canning homemade bread and butter pickles?
Same reasons every year:
I like the aesthetics...
I like the control over ingredients...
And I like that the girls say "mommy pickles" are their favorite pickles.
Do you have a favorite pickle?

A few times I have put up mustard pickles--a handwritten recipe literally pinned --with straight sewing pins--into a 1915 'Crisco Cookbook' that belonged to my grandmother's aunt. Delicious!
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying your blog since I stumbles onto it while trolling for World War II rationing history. I was listening to episodes of the old radio program 'The Great Gildersleeve' and was intrigued by the war year commercials that involved rationing, shortages and red points.
Thanks for sharing your experiment.
Nice to see you post, Charis. Mmm...mustard pickles sound yummy - I may have to search the net for a recipe!
